09241 Resilience Inventory

This inventory is organized around the “Six Ways to Die” categories of hunger, thirst, injury, illness, heat, cold.

Thirst

If the water supply stopped, how soon before you and your household are out of water?

What emergency sources of water can you access? (Rivers, streams, creeks, wells, ponds, tanks, water heater, swimming pools, household water storage in barrels or bottles, etc.)

Do you have water purification equipment and supplies? Describe in detail.

Do you know how to improvise a water purification system? Describe the methods you are familiar with.

Do you know how to improvise a rainwater harvesting system? Describe the systems you know how to improvise.

Hunger

If the conventional “just in time” food system collapses, how long before you and your household are out of food?

What edible plants grow wild in your area during the year? Can you recognize them? Have you ever eaten any of them?

List the locations where agribusiness corporations and farmers store large amounts of primary agricultural products in your area. (E.g., wheat, soybeans, corn, etc.)

List the large food warehouses, distribution centers, and food processors in your area.

Do you grow any food? If so, what and how much do you grow?

What happens with your refrigerated and frozen foods if the electrical grid collapses? Do you have canning equipment, jars, lids, rings, and the knowledge (or at least the instructions) to use them to save your frozen foods?

List any direct food buying you do with farmers (roadside stands, farmers markets, etc.)

Illness

Are you up-to-date on vaccinations and dental care?

List any chronic medical issues that need regular treatment. Do you keep at least 90 days supply of your meds on hand? What alternatives to the conventional system can you use if the industrialized medical system breaks down and/or is not available?

Do you have any medical or dental issues that need treatment?

How's the condition of your body? Are you overweight? Is your lifestyle sedentary or active? If sedentary, do you exercise or walk or do other manual labor?

Injury

Have you been trained in basic first aid and CPR procedures?

List the basic first aid supplies you have on hand.

What is your risk of social unrest? Describe any sources of social unrest in your area and locate them in relation to the geographies of your life.

What is your risk of crime? What are the crime rates in the geographies of your life?

What is your risk of extreme weather events (tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.)?

What is your risk of extreme earth events (volcanoes, earthquakes, mudslides)?

What injuries are your greater risks?

What ideas do you have on mitigating your injury risks from all of these potential safety issues?

Heat

What is your risk for extreme heat?

How long do these periods of extreme heat last?

If you can’t access air conditioning during extreme heat, how will you manage the situation to prevent heat stroke?

Do you know the symptoms of the varying degrees of heat injury and how to apply first aid in those situations?

Cold

What is your risk for extreme cold? What is the typical duration of extreme cold in your area?

Do you have a method(s) to keep warm in the event of power grid failure?

Do you know how to recognize the symptoms and treat hypothermia?

Do you have extra blankets on hand?

Miscellaneous

Do you have an emergency plan for each of the major risks/hazards in your life?

Do you have bug-out bags or buckets or supplies? If so, list the inventory.

Do you have a place to go if you must evacuate your residence?

How will you contact family/household members if you become separated during an emergency?

Do you have an emergency power system? Generator? Solar battery charger? Rechargeable batteries?

What is your plan for emergency lighting?

What do you do if there is a general collapse of technological civilization?
